We could know the most outstanding and the most recent projects in the history of this department through an interview with Dr. Jorge Ocampo Candiani, School of Medicine and ‘Hospital Universitario’ Service of Dermatology Head.

School of Medicine and ‘Hospital Universitario’ Service of Dermatology is one of the most successful scientific teams and with more production in the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL), its studies are really important nationally and internationally.

Department of Dermatology researchers have been awarded with a large number of awards nationally and internationally. Constantly, this academic research group’s study area and works are recognized internationally.

We could know the most outstanding and the most recent projects in the history of this department through an interview with Dr. Jorge Ocampo Candiani, School of Medicine and ‘Hospital Universitario’ Service of Dermatology Head, and International Society for Dermatologic Surgery President.

This Department has an interdisciplinary laboratory of dermatology, where not only the skin manifestations are studied, because there are medical specialists of different areas of science, who carry out in vitro and in vivo studies, new medications development as well as molecular studies.

“We not only see patient clinically, we go to the bottom of the problem,” said Ocampo Candiani, who is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

One of the most important international study areas is the one that studies the immune response against intracellular infectious agents and mechanisms of virulence and pathogenicity such as mycetoma, tuberculosis, and Hansen’s disease, also known as leprosy.

These diseases are endemic in Mexico and in leprosy, Nuevo Leon is between the third and second place in the prevalence of this disease in our country.

The mycetomas, caused by nocardias, are the most common deep mycosis in North Mexico, and it is the most fruitful study area of this department, because sometimes, we have reactivated patient in his productive life and sometimes we have saved his life.

The tuberculosis is a disease which is present in Mexico, because it has been resistant to conventional medications. The variety of causal agent and new resistances to medications are being searched due to this bacteria mutates frequently.

It is about to see how each ill person responds to different medications and we try to create an ideal prescription for every patient.

New methods of diagnosis are implemented in these areas; the host relationship with the causal agent is studied and new treatments are analyzing the results of these treatments and new compounds are searched.

The skin manifestations of patients who suffer from hematological problems such as lymphoma, leukemia as well as viral diseases as herpes are being also studied.

Another of the most developed studies by this department is the one related to the vitiligo; this is a disease that affects from the one to the two percent of population and its cause is not known yet.

It is about to discover how the cells get inhibited or destroy the cells that produce the natural pigment of skin and, on the other hand, to discover which are the genes involved in this kind of marks development.

The collateral effects of medication used in treatments against vitiligo are studied, because the skin is an organ that allows the absorption of medication, which can be bad for other organs.

In leprosy studies, patients are found and a treatment is given to them when they feel the first symptoms. Relatives are also examined because any possibility of contagion has to be prevented although it is not a very contagious disease.

“Our people deserve we contribute with something really useful, because it has no sense to study things that we never going to make it possible,” said Ocampo Candiani.

“We are focused on seeing which impact is going to have this type of diseases in our society, those diseases that affect the most vulnerable people of our country and that most of the times the leading companies are not interested in them, but we are interested in helping them,” said Ocampo Candiani.

The epidemiological analysis is trying to be done in this region with these pathologies about the varieties that are in North Mexico and subsequently develop vaccines to those diseases. There is a close collaboration with the Department of Immunology and the School of Medicine Department of Analytic Chemistry and the Department of Microbiology in order to carry out these studies.

“The most important thing is that interrelationship we have with patients as well as doctors and professors in science, whom we communicate our concern and we work together to find the best methods of diagnosis and treatment.”

That interrelationship got that national and transnational enterprises fix their look at the UANL, and all this has caused that a large number of studies are carried out where enterprises carry out their clinical studies in order to test medication, being guaranteed by the School of Medicine Ethics Committee.

Multicentral studies are also carried out internationally, and the results presented by the Department are used to approve or reject new drugs or medication.

The Service of Dermatology carries out between four and five studies with national and international enterprises per year, and this has allowed them to generate resources to carry out the studies with more social sense, turning itself into autosustainable.

“It is really important the relationship with the industry to generate resources that allow us to encourage researchers and carry out basic and clinical studies that although they are not profitable for industry, they are essential for our population’s health,” said doctor Ocampo.

Likewise, the creativity for generating new studies as well as the use of medications created in other places of the world for being applied in the main diseases in Mexico, are important in the development of this Department’s activities.

“In last years, we are more and more focused on developing a study by creating a new knowledge and attracting more resources in order to treat patients and study more,” finished Dr. Ocampo.

Doctor Jorge Ocampo Candiani is the head of the ‘Dr. Eleuterio Gonzalez’ Hospital Universitario Program of Dermatology and Dermatological Surgery Specialty.

He got a Specialty in Dermatology at ‘Dr. Jose Eleuterio Gonzalez’ Hospital Universitario. In 1987, he studied a ‘Subspecialty in Dermatological Surgery’ at the Universidad Central de Barcelona.

Dr. Ocampo Candiani has been certified and recertified by the Mexican Council of Dermatology, besides being member of the National Academy of Medicine and Professor Adviser of the School of Medicine before the UANL H. University Council.

Nowadays, Dr. Jorge Ocampo Candiani is the head of the Service of Dermatology.
